Nature Preserve

Posted on August 29, 2007 18:00 by hbruun

FYI... we have a nature preserve across from us

Julington Durbin Creek Preserve

13130 Bartram Park Blvd.   Mapit
Jacksonville, FL 32223

Amenities offered at this park:  3 Trails Unpaved (Miles) + Fishing Available

Acres:  2006.96, Park Type:  Preservation

The area is located on a peninsula formed at the confluence of
Julington and Durbin creeks, and has approximately nine miles of
shoreline along the two creeks.  The peninsula is a long sandy
ridge that grades into floodplain swamp and marsh along the
creeks’ shores.  Natural communities consist of sandhill along
the higher areas near the center of the peninsula and flatwoods
at the lower elevations.  The preserve contains extensive
floodplain wetlands, providing water quality and floodplain
protection for both creeks and the St.  Johns River.  Wildlife
viewing: Known wildlife at the preserve include bald eagle,
osprey, gopher tortoise, bobcat, turkey, deer and numerous
species of wading and songbirds.  Manatees seasonally swim in
both creeks.  Recreational activities: Hiking, picnicking,
horseback riding, bicycling and nature study.

Meeting September 10th

Posted on August 29, 2007 09:01 by jbooth

North West meeting September 10th at 5:30-7:30pm

Important

On Aug.  29 At the Switzerland Middle school at 5:30-7:30 a state
appointed committe will give a up date on the Comprehensive Plan
so changes can be made.

Questions and comments will be answered at the meeting.

This meeting will be your chance to tell them what you want to
see done in St.  John County.

If you wants changes made this is you chance!

This is from Commissioner Stevenson:
Dear Neighbors:

The County EAR, Evaluation and Appraisal Report is underway.
This report is a progress on our Comprehensive Plan adopted in
2000 on our county's Goals, Objectives and Policies or GOP ...
and no this is not a statement of party affiliation!

THIS EVALUATION OF WHERE WE ARE AND WHERE WE ARE GOING OCCURS
ONCE EVERY 7 YEARS.  THE NORTHWEST EAR MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR:

MONDAY-SEPTEMBER 10TH FROM 5:30 TO 7:30 PM at SWITZERLAND POINT
MIDDLE SCHOOL

A report on the first phase of this process is scheduled for the
Board of County Commissioners on October 2, 2007.

This is a PUBLIC INPUT meeting-and thrives from a broad
attendance of our citizens.  It is your opportunity for input to
this important planning document.  The meeting will be run by
Regional Planning Council who has been hired by the county to
assist with our EAR on our Comprehensive Plan.

The EAR is a progress report and overview of the Comprehensive
Plan.  It will determine where we have succeeded and where we
need improvement.  It may change and set priorities and
challenges of our diverse county.

This is part of focusing on our county's future and how we will
get there.  These policies form a basis for how we make decisions
as Commissioners and the state looks to these policies and our
progress towards them when considering changes to our Future Land
Use Map.

Many important topics are reflected in this draft document
include a broad range of topics including:

  • Economic Development (Balancing our Tax Base)
  • Transportation (local roads, regional roads, the beltway, other modes of transportation)
  • Protecting our Natural Environment (Wetlands and habitat)
  • Protecting Agricultural resources (Food supply-Energy Costs)
  • Historic Preservation(Maintaining Local Character and Historic Assets)
  • Water (Conservation, Use, protecting water quality)
  • Energy
  • Financial Feasibility and Level of Service (LOS) for quality of life and infrastructure.

At first blush these seem wildly disconnected-but they are

not-they are all issues affected by growth and how well we
execute our policies will affect what St.  Johns County will look
like in 20 years and beyond, and whether we are on a sustainable
course for our future.

These are essential and competing interests that must be properly
balanced for the success of our community.  If there is a county
in our state that is positioned for success, it is ours, but we
have to be willing to understand these issues and approach them
with common sense.

Your EAR is a foundation report of goals progress and challenges
of our county.  I invite you to participate in the process by
attending the community meeting.

Cyndi Stevenson
St. Johns County Commissioner
